The Police identified this morning the four fatal victims (three women and one man) of a traffic accident that occurred last night on PR-111, kilometer 17.7, in front of the Wendy’s in Saint Sebastian.
The accident involved five people, but four of them died on the spot as a result of their injuries, while the fifth, a 21-year-old man, was transported to a hospital for treatment.
The fatal victims were identified as Aníbal González, 70 years old and a resident of the Bronx in New York; Maria Hold, 50 years old; Milagros Soto, 72; and Ana González, 72. All three women resided in Rochester, New York.
Meanwhile, the 21-year-old was identified as Féliz Quiñones Vélez, who is a resident of the Robles neighborhood in San Sebastián.
“The people are Puerto Rican. They are originally from San Sebastián, but have spent their entire lives in the United States. The husband of one of them (of the victims) when he died had previously requested that he be buried in San Sebastián and they came to that funeral. They arrived on August 10 or 11 and unfortunately there was that tragedy last night”, highlighted the mayor of San Sebastián, Javier Jiménez, in a radio interview (Radio Isla 1320).
According to the preliminary investigation by the Aguadilla Traffic Division, the accident occurred when Aníbal González was driving along the aforementioned road in a white Hyundai Accent, in which the women were traveling as passengers.
Upon reaching that kilometer, González made a left turn, described as “an improper U-turn”, without taking proper precautions and without giving way to a white 2005 Ford Mustang driven by Quiñones Vélez..
The negligence of the driver of the Hyundai, according to the Uniform, resulted in him being hit from the right side with the front of the Ford Mustang.
The driver of the Hyundai, as well as the passengers Hold and Soto, would have died on the spot, while Ana González was ejected as a result of the collision and fell to the pavement, where she was found lifeless due to the severity of her injuries.
The lieutenant Rolando Perez Nievesdeputy director of the Aguadilla Traffic Division, told this newspaper last night that the victims did not reside on the island and that the car they were driving was rented.
“The victims have names of Latino people, but they are not residents”held.
Regarding the survivor, he specified that he was taken to a hospital in the area and, although “he is injured, he is stable.”
“A blood alcohol test was taken. As it was by blood, the results are not instant”he explained.
Agent Norvin Lorenzo Chaparro, supervised by Sergeant José Cordero Quiñones, and both directed by Pérez Nieves, took on the investigation of the case together with prosecutor Rufino Jiménez.
The vehicles were seized and taken to the facilities of the Aguadilla Transit Division.
