The Office of the US Trade Representative, katherine taihas announced the start of negotiations, which give continuity to the 21st Century Trade initiative, agreed upon by both countries on June 1st.

The negotiations will include measures to streamline trade, promote good regulatory practices, set strong standards against corruption, improve relations between small and medium-sized companies, deepen agricultural exchange and eliminate discriminatory barriers.

Digital trade, labor and environmental standards, and how to deal with interference from China’s economic practices will also be covered.

Taiwan’s top negotiator, John Deng, expects talks to start next month. Deng has stressed that one of the issues to be discussed will be the China’s “economic coercion” of other countries.

“The targets of their economic coercion are not just the US or Taiwan – he assured – they do it to a lot of countries. The damage to the global economy and the commercial order is great”.

Chinese protest

China has reiterated its opposition to this new economic initiative between Washington and Taipei.

“China will take resolute steps to assert its sovereignty Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin has warned – we advise the US to stop making misjudgments”.

The Ministry has recalled that China opposes any official trade agreement between a third country and Taiwanwhich it considers part of its territory.

Relations between China and the US are going through a bad time after the visit of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, to Taiwan.

The Chinese Army has carried out military exercises in the air and sea space surrounding Taiwan in response to that trip and that of five other US congressmen.

Beijing has also agreed to sanctions against Taiwanese politicians most in favor of independence.
