The online comparison service Comparis compared the net premiums of the legally required motor liability insurance for eleven vehicles and two driver profiles in the ten largest Swiss cities. It turned out that there are big price differences between the providers and that men pay more than women.

The Swiss-wide average premium across all profiles and vehicles is CHF 238 (Smile) for the cheapest insurance in the Comparis comparison, while the most expensive provider (Generali) charges CHF 375, which corresponds to a premium that is 58 percent higher.

The differences between the sexes are even greater. According to Comparis, the average premiums for men differ by up to 61 percent, depending on the provider. Women face a price premium of 55 percent.

On average, men pay around three percent more than women for their auto insurance. “Earlier Comparis analyzes have already shown that men are often discriminated against when it comes to car insurance premiums compared to women,” explains Comparis mobility expert Andrea Auer. But there are also providers who make no gender differences.

Drivers in the city of Lausanne pay the most expensive provider (Generali: CHF 415) 80 percent more than the cheapest (Smile: CHF 230). In other cities the difference is not so great: in Biel and St. Gallen it is 77 percent, in Winterthur 72 percent, in Bern 69 percent and in Geneva 66 percent.

In Lugano, the average premium costs 307 francs. That is around 17 percent more than in the cheapest city of Bern with 263 francs. Auer explains the high premiums in Ticino with possible additional costs for insurers: “The level of premiums is determined, among other things, by the attractiveness of a market. Ticino is a rather small sales region. In addition, insurance products must be marketed in Italian.”
