Attorney General Tom Miller says his reelection campaign is based on policy, not ideology.

Miller is the longest-serving attorney general in the U.S.: He was first elected in 1978 and has served nearly 40 years in office. Speaking at the Des Moines Register Political Soapbox on Wednesday, he reminisced about his early days in office, when he was the only Democrat to hold a statewide position. He remembered strategizing how to win re-election against steep odds.

“Then we made one of the best — perhaps the best — decisions that we’ve ever made,” Miller said. “We concluded that the best policy was the best politics. The best service was the best politics.”

Miller said that puts him in contrast with his Republican opponent, Guthrie County Attorney Brenna Bird. She spoke at the Soapbox on Saturday, promising to sue President Joe Biden’s administration and spend more time with law enforcement, if elected.

Miller told his Soapbox crowd on Wednesday that Bird had “an ideological agenda” — which was a “great contrast” to his candidacy.

“I just really enjoy and am energized and satisfied by using the law to serve ordinary Iowans,” he said.

The attorney general is charged with consumer protection, and Miller said Iowa’s Consumer Protection Division was “one of the best in the country.” The office also handles prosecution of violent crimes and criminal appeals.

“During the course of this, we’ve developed a great relationship with law enforcement,” he said. “It’s a relationship of respect, trust and common good.”

Miller has also focused on opioids during his tenure, suing pharmaceutical companies that misrepresented the drugs. Miller called for more prevention efforts and treatment for people who are addicted. 

“We’re in the process of getting, over the long term, $200 to $250 million to help victims to make Iowa better,” he said. 

Although Miller has been reelected nearly a dozen times as Iowa’s attorney general, he told reporters after his speech that he will “never take anything for granted” in politics, recognizing that Iowa has shifted further to the right. Regardless, Miller said he felt “confident” about the race.

“Voters seem very supportive,” he said. “They seem to believe what I talked about here today: That we serve ordinary people, and serve them well.”
