DELAWARE- One local community college is adding another degree to it’s line up with the hopes of tackling the current teacher shortage.
Delaware Technical Community College now has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education program.
Officials tell us they received a formal request from superintendent’s across the state on ways to bolster the workforce and they say the program could be a solution.
The college already has a education program but we’re told this was a move to build on their current offerings.
Officials say the goal is to also help districts grow their talent from within. “We know we have individuals in schools who are paraprofessionals for example. They’ve worked in the field and love what they’re doing,” Vice President of Academic Affairs Justina Thomas said.
“This is an opportunity that they may come back to school and finish out their years and become teachers that can lead the classroom.”
The first cohort of 43 students will start their coursework August 22nd.
This also stands as the college’s second bachelor’s degree program and will be offered at the Wilmington, Dover, and Georgetown campuses.
