Springbok speedster Makazole Mapimpi is ready to race after kicks and pin the All Blacks back when the teams lock horns at Ellis Park on Saturday.
Speaking at a Bok conference in the build up to the Rugby Championship Test, Mapimpi zoned in on the Boks’ kicking game and backline play, and the threat it poses to New Zealand.
“We have our game plan as the Springboks and I am comfortable with the ball in hand, but I know that there are times when I need to adjust and try to get my hands on the ball and try to create opportunities,” the left wing said.
“Our kicking is also a key area of our game, and it helps us transfer pressure on the opposition, so we need to make sure that our kicking game is effective this weekend.”

Kurt-Lee Arendse’s contesting in the air was pivotal to victory for the Boks in Nelspruit but the right wing is suspended, so the onus falls on Mapimpi and Jesse Kriel to lead the kick-chase in Johannesburg on Saturday.
“It’s good for me to walk around and chase towards the ball. It’s always our game plan in terms of the kicking game and the box kick, or making a fade,” said Mapimpi.
“And it’s also to get into their heads and to make them doubt even trying to counter because they have a good back three, so we need to make sure our kicking game is very important.
“For us as wings, we need to get up field and make that contest as much as we can.”
