With Ilkay Gündogan and Kevin De Bruyne as luxury leakers, Erling Haaland signed a brace with which he demonstrated his boundless voracity that Manchester City took advantage of, winning 0-2 at West Ham in their Premier League debut.
After the fall against Liverpool in the Community Shield, Pep Guardiola’s men could not suffer another blow. There was a lot at stake in his Premier debut, but, above all, one player had all the lights on him: Erling Haland.
City’s most flashy reinforcement was lost in its first official match. Many questioned his suitability to fit into a style like Guardiola’s team. In fact, against Liverpool, he did not even touch the ball twenty times throughout the entire match.
Although he already scored in a friendly against Bayern Munich, at the moment of truth, he failed. Guardiola had to do some retouching to turn the tables and he sat down Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez to bring in Ilkay Gündogan and Phil Foden. With the German on the pitch, City gained some verticality and depth. And, from this, Haaland benefited.
Erling Haaland’s dad in the stands
Erling Haaland made his debut in style in the Premier League, with a brace for Manchester City to win 2-0 on their visit to West Ham, this Sunday on matchday 1, in which Manchester United lost 2-1 at home against Brighton.
The Norwegian star, who arrived from Borussia Dortmund, was quick to prove decisive for City: he scored his first goal by converting a penalty in minute 36.
In minute 65, Haaland achieved the second and final against the Londoners, with a spectacular action, breaking away to receive a measured pass from Kevin De Bruyne and put the ball out of Alphonse Areola’s reach.
In the stands was Erling’s father, Alfie Haaland, a former Manchester City player who was pleased to see how his son made his debut in the Premier League, giving his new team hope.
The City thus recovers the smile after having lost last weekend 3-1 against Liverpool in the Community Shield (Super Cup of England).
