In the afternoon of Friday, August 5, one of the tanks at the Matanzas Supertanker Base was struck by lightning, causing a large-scale fire. The Health System responded quickly once the fact was known and all the conditions were immediately created to receive the injured.
In the institutions, the medical, nursing and technical teams were reinforced, and all the resources for the massive reception of the injured were organized.
From the province of Havana, ten medical and nursing professionals joined, who will support the care of patients at the “Faustino Pérez” Hospital in Matanzas. At the same time, six ambulances from the Single National Emergency System were transferred to this province to support the transfer of patients who need it.
Until 7:00 pm on August 6, 121 people were treated, of which 36 are hospitalized and 85 patients were discharged.
The 36 patients are hospitalized in six health institutions in the country.
As part of the search work, a corpse is recovered at the accident site that was transferred to the provincial Legal Medicine service, which is in the process of being identified by professionals from the institution and the Ministry of the Interior.
Since the beginning of the accident, the highest political and government authorities of our country have been present and monitored. Medical assistance is guaranteed to all injured persons with the necessary resources for their care.
We reiterate our gratitude to all agencies, organizations and people in general, who have supported the actions we carry out with patients and their families, as well as the concern shown by hospitalized patients.
From the official accounts of the Ministry of Public Health, a part will be published twice a day, where we will report on the evolution of hospitalized patients.
