August 24 is a special day for Ukraine: the war is six months old – and the country is celebrating the 31st day of independence. Will Moscow provoke on this date? Or even attack Ukraine?
On the one hand, August 24 is a public holiday for Ukraine: 31 years earlier, the country seceded from the Soviet Union. But the cities are doing without festivities this year: Kyiv warns of potentially serious attacks by Russia on Independence Day.
On the other hand, August 24 also marks the date on which the bloody conflict will be six months old. “We must all be aware that this week Russia could try to do something particularly ugly, something particularly evil,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned the people.
In Kyiv, for example, large public gatherings are prohibited until August 25: the authorities fear bomb or rocket attacks. According to Ukrainian information, the Russian military has brought relevant material to bases in Belarus. It is also conceivable that show trials of fighters from the Azov regiment being held in separatist-held Donetsk region will begin on Independence Day.
Attacks on civilian targets expected
Such actions would not be of military value. But Selenskyj knows: “One of the main goals of the enemy is to humiliate us, to devalue our resources and our heroes, to spread despair and fear and to fuel conflicts.” It is therefore all the more important not to show weakness, said the Ukrainian President.
WASHINGTON, Aug 22 (Reuters) – The United States has intelligence that Russia is planning to launch fresh attacks against Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and government facilities soon, a US official said on Monday.

In fact, the Ukrainian armed forces have shown strength and resilience: when war broke out on February 24, who would have thought that the Ukrainian army could withstand the offensive for six months – and longer? There were certainly few in the west – and expectations were also very different in the east.
In February, ????????prepared a parade in advance & purchased 45,000 body bags for the 1st wave of ethnic cleansing in occupied Ukraine. In August, Russians realized that they would need those bags for themselves. Don’t buy a body bag for your neighbor, because you will go home in it. pic.twitter.com/4H1K1uDnsZ

After all, Moscow has given its troops 45,000 body bags and mobile crematoria that are said to be used after a quick victory over Ukraine to clean up the conquered areas. They are now needed in their own ranks: According to the defenders, over 45,000 Russian soldiers have died.
Western weapons against annihilation
No wonder the tone in Russia is becoming increasingly harsh. “No mercy for the Ukrainian people,” tweeted Mikhail Ulyanov, the Russian representative at the international organizations in Vienna. And after Darya Dugina’s death in a car bomb in Moscow, the Russian broadcaster Tsargrad openly called for the opponents of the war to be wiped out.

Rhetoric is one thing, reality on the field is another. There, the Ukrainian armed forces are far from being wiped off the map – also thanks to the massive arms shipments from the West. At the forefront: the USA. Washington far outstrips military, economic and financial aid from other countries.
Giving speeches in Brussels ???????? on “strategic autonomy” and “global role” is one thing, but when it really matters for the security of Europe it’s the ???????? that steps in. Embarrassing. pic.twitter.com/vGrJlukJ2I

In the last two years, Uncle Sam has given Kyiv military aid worth $10.6 billion – you can see a list of the equipment given here. Germany will supply the Ukraine with ammunition for the Panzerhaubitze 2000, which the Bundeswehr has not even tried: It is about 255 Vulcano grenades that, thanks to GPS, can even hit a moving target with one meter precision over a distance of 70 kilometers, reports “Soldat und Technology”.
“Probably the last campaign of this kind”
Most recently, Turkey delivered 50 Kirpi MRAP armored vehicles to Ukraine, and the latest US package also includes 40 similar MaxxPro MRAP vehicles. There are also anti-tank missiles with a range of less than five kilometers, ammunition for Carl Gustav recoilless guns that shoot a few hundred meters and smaller artillery systems that fire 105 millimeter ammunition.
The Saudis will return to Ukraine the Grim-2 missile system bought from it, which is more reliable than Iskander and fires missiles further, 700 km.

Overall, Ukraine is apparently preparing to engage in close combat more than before. In fact, some experts believe that massive artillery duels like in Donbass are a thing of the past. “The current conflict was probably the last campaign of this kind, the course of which was determined by the artillery of the era of industrial armies,” writes Russian military blogger Atomic Cherry on a Telegram channel on Aug. 20.
In the “first phase” of the war, the Russian army was able to secure its progress with “50,000 to 60,000 shells per day”, but now Moscow is reaching its limits. On the one hand, this is due to wear and tear and, on the other hand, because “for example, 122-millimeter grenades have not been produced in the Russian Federation since 2013”.
Where is the Kherson offensive?
Atomic Cherry continues: “The artillery of Russia and Ukraine can no longer reach the performance level of six months ago.” Therefore, when it comes to warfare, the importance of the air force and “carefully planned, pinpoint operations with high-tech weapons aimed at strategically limiting the capabilities of the enemy” is increasing again.
The Ukrainian army in the south of the country shows how this works in practice. The Antonivka Bridge in Kherson, previously riddled with artillery shells, is apparently destroyed by Himar rockets on August 22. Kyiv wants to enclose Moscow’s troops in the occupied city.
But at the same time one has to ask oneself: where is the Ukrainian offensive on the big city, which has been announced for weeks? Despite the supply problems, Russia is strengthening its forces there and is withdrawing troops from the Donbass: Will Kyiv really go on the counteroffensive somewhere else for the first time – maybe even on Independence Day?
This excellent article by @IAPonomarenko reinforces what I’ve been saying…
1. A “large scale counteroffensive” would be tough, but many smaller scale deliberate attacks by UA is doable.
2. Kherson is a large oblast…the size of our state of Maryland.
3. It will happen. https://t.co/nvZVeKKoh0— Mark Hertling (@MarkHertling) August 22, 2022
Americans should urgently leave Ukraine
The fact is: time is of the essence. From October, winter will slowly freeze the battlefields in Ukraine. At the same time, Zelenskyy faces the challenge of keeping the West happy, because the war cannot be won without his help. ‘Maybe will [er] end the war before Christmas because the real problem is getting the West to keep its promises in the long run,” Keir Giles of the London think tank Chatham House told CNN.
Vladimir Putin is also under pressure. The Kremlin ruler would like to have pseudo-elections held in Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhia sooner rather than later in order to connect the areas. Reports are piling up indicating growing dissatisfaction among the population, which is said not least to be due to economic hardship that is becoming more and more noticeable.
In this respect, Moscow will probably not miss the opportunity to strike on the symbolic Independence Day – even if it sticks to a barrage of bombs and missiles that are inaccurate and will again claim civilian casualties. The US is urging its citizens to leave Ukraine over the expected attacks.
