One night he’s supermoon watching, another he’s looking for Saturn – Roger Fagg is always on the lookout for out of this world images through his telescope.
And it’s been a busy few nights for the Timaru man – he has been keeping an eye on the moon over the past few evenings, as the final supermoon of the year rose in the night skies on Friday – a “Sturgeon Moon”.
The Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand said the Moon would be full at 1.36pm on Friday – the moment when the Moon is exactly 180 degrees opposite the Sun.
The August full moon is widely known in North America as the Sturgeon Moon, because the giant sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this part of the northern summer, according to the United States-based Old Farmer’s Almanac.

“Supermoon” is more of a popular term than a scientific one, but the general concept is a full moon that happens near or at the time when the Moon is at the closest point of its orbit to Earth.
Fagg, a hobby astronomer and science buff, said Friday had been a great night to view the moon, after weeks of “overcast, mucky nights’’ where it had been hard to see things through the telescope.
“It’s about being in the right place, at the right time.

“The trouble with the telescope is that it magnifies everything else in the air as well.’’
He was looking forward to Sunday evening when he hoped to see Saturn through his lens – at the time the planet was closest to the earth all year.
“It will be 63 miles closer than usual.’’
And then he would be looking ahead to November when there would be a total lunar eclipse.
During this time, the southern limb of the moon will pass through the centre of the earth’s shadow.
