As I climb the narrow stairs of the gothic church tower in Nördlingen, in southern Germany, the stone steps seem to shimmer in the suncausing unexpected streaks of light to illuminate what should have been a dark climb.

“That’s because the entire tower is made of stones with little diamonds inside,” says Horst Lenner, an enthusiastic guard at the building. “Luckily (the diamonds) are very, very small, otherwise I think the tower would have collapsed a long time ago”, he jokes, with a wide smile on his face.

Lenner jokes, but tells the truth: during the construction of the town, which on records appears to date from the 9th century, its inhabitants did not realize that the stones were made up of millions of small diamondsis a concentration like no other.

From the top of the tower, this small German town -with 19,000 inhabitants- is a postcard of tranquility. But it was a violent event that was responsible for this unusual feature of Nördlingen: the impact of an asteroid with the Earth 15 million years ago.

Shining stones

Traveling at an estimated speed of 25 km per second, the 1 km long asteroid hit the ground hard, forming a 26 km diameter crater. This is where the town of Nördlingen is located.

The impact subjected the rocky soil to so much heat and pressure that carbon bubbles inside the rocks turned into tiny diamonds. all less than 0.2 millimeters, barely visible to the human eye.

Not knowing that the stone, called Suevi, was studded with diamonds, residents built buildings almost entirely out of this rock, making Nördlingen a town like no other in most of the planet.

“Everything inside the city walls was made from the rock that was hit by the asteroid.”, says Roswitha Feil, a resident of the city.

But even more strange is the fact that the residents recently discovered the origin of the crater where the city where they live was built.

Since they had never thought seriously about the glow that came from their houses, they were convinced that the town had been built in the crater of an extinct volcano. The story only changed when American geologists Eugense Shoemaker and Edward Chao visited the city in the 1960s.

After surveying the landscape from a distance, scientists noted that the crater did not meet the criteria for a volcano. So they traveled to the place to prove their thesis: that the hole had formed from top to bottom.

The couple did not take long to confirm the hypothesis: exploring the wall of the Nördlingen church, they immediately discovered the accumulation of precious stones.

“At school we were taught that our land is the way it is because of a volcano,” recalls Feil. “But after it was discovered to be from an asteroid, all the history books changed,” she says.

Shortly after the Americans’ visit, local geologists estimated that the city’s walls and buildings contained approximately 72,000 tons of diamonds.

Suevite can be found in other parts of the world where similar impacts have occurred, but there is nowhere with such a high concentration of the gemstone as Nördlingen.

And strolling through the quiet streets after coming down from the tower, protected from the cold by the colorful houses of its historic center and the wall that surrounds Nördlingen, I can see how the walls shine every time the sun’s rays break through the clouds.

“It’s something unique,” says Stefan Hölzl, geologist and director of the RiesKrater museum. Housed in a 16th-century stable, the space educates visitors on how the asteroid impact changed the future of the city. In six places there are windows with pieces of the meteorite.

“There are places in the world where this type of material has been used in construction, but never in the same proportion as here,” says Hölzl, as we look out the windows. “Stones were used here throughout the city,” he adds.

And it’s not just the buildings that reflect events from millions of years ago.

Beyond the city wall, pine and coniferous forests reminiscent of the Jurassic period surround the crater, fed by the region’s extremely fertile soil. hit by the asteroid. Suevite quarries and mines dot the landscape.

NASA visits

Hölzl tells me that the Nördlingen crater is so private that astronauts from the Apollo 14 and Apollo 16 missions visited the site before traveling to the Moon. The idea was to become familiar with the rocks they might find in space and know which ones to bring back to Earth.

“We receive visits from NASA. Two weeks ago astronauts from the European Space Agency were here”, says the scientist before taking me to a room in the museum where a moonstone is exhibited, a souvenir from one of the Apollo missions to the Moon.

In spite of everything, many inhabitants do not seem to give much importance to the fact of living surrounded by millions of small diamonds.

“We see them every day, for us it is nothing special”a woman tells me as she leaves the church.

For Hölzl, who lived in Munich before moving to Nördlingen, the idea that people don’t care about the site’s unique geology is surprising. “They don’t think it’s a big deal and wonder why so many people from all over the world visit the city,” he says.
