The European Council has adopted this Friday a regulation for the voluntary reduction of the demand for natural gas by 15% during the coming winter.
From the agency they specified that the measure seeks to guarantee energy savings in the winter season, given the possibility of cuts in Russian gas supplies.
The decrease in demand will be specified based on the average consumption of each of the Member States in the last five years. The measure will be in force between August 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023.
“While all Member States will do their best to comply with the reductions, the Council has specified some exemptions and possibilities for the application of a partial or, in some cases, total exemption from the mandatory reduction target, with the aim of reflecting the situations of the Member States and ensure that gas reductions are effective in increasing security of supply in the EU,” the statement explains.
