Sony recently changed their model for PlayStation Plus users. In addition to the already known Essential subscription, Extra and Premium versions are now also available. In addition to well-known advantages such as online multiplayer and cloud storage, these also give you access to a wide catalog of video games that you can download or stream for free. The service is somewhat reminiscent of Microsoft’s Game Pass.
For many, the most exciting part of these free games is that you can find titles from all generations of Sony consoles. Because in the past it wasn’t always easy to access the PlayStation retro catalogue.
To make sure you don’t miss out on some of PlayStation’s past gems, we’ve picked a few titles you should definitely play while they’re part of the PlayStation Plus range.
Of course, Sony’s first response to Nintendo’s successful platformers was Crash Bandicoot. But there was also a second series of games that measured up to Mario and Co. at the time. Ape Escape is a wild collect-a-thon in which you have to use a net and other gadgets to hunt for escapes.
The special thing about the title was that, similar to a twin-stick shooter, you play it primarily with the two analog sticks. This means that back then, Ape Escape required you to own one of the new Dual Shock controllers.
Resident Evil: Director’s Cut
With its success, Resident Evil was able to independently establish the survival horror genre on the PlayStation. Dhe Director’s Cut version of the game ranks as the best here, aside from the terrific GameCube remake. Unfortunately, the game is now one of the retro titles for which you have to put a little more money on the table. All the better that you can now get Resident Evil: Director’s Cut as part of the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.
If you’re not put off by the creepy pixel look and the now antique tank controls, you’ll get a real horror classic with a good pinch of trash here.
The late 90’s were heaven for jRPG fans. Of course, the numerous gems on the Super Nintendo and games like Final Fantasy 7 come to mind first. In 1998 we also published the first part of the Wild Arms series: A classic Japanese RPG that mixes fantasy and wild west. In addition to the exciting scenario, the title also offers a gripping story, well-written characters and a tactical combat system in which you can even create your own spells. Wild ARMs’ music is also among the best in the genre. Incidentally, the third part of the series is also included in PlayStation Plus Premium and was released for the PlayStation 2.
Unfortunately, the best PSone Tekken, Tekken 3, is not available on PlayStation Store. Tekken 2 is still worth checking out though. After all, it was this part that was the first contact with the 3D fighter for many. Of course it lacks some iconic characters and the numerous additional modes that set Tekken 3 apart from other games in the genre, but even today Tekken 2 is still an interesting insight into the history of the series.
If you want to get your friends really wet in Tekken, you should watch the videos from Red Bull Tekken pro Anakin look at. In his academy he turns you into real experts.

Dark Cloud & Dark Chronicle
Dark Cloud and its successor Dark Chronicle are action role-playing games from Level-5, which was later responsible for the Professor Layton games, among other things. The titles combine classic dungeon crawling with city building elements. Even then, this mix ensured that the games were equally well received by critics and players. Meanwhile, they are still real insider tips for many genre fans. The fact that you can now experience the entire series for free with your PlayStation Plus premium subscription makes it much easier to enjoy the retro gems.
Another RPG from Level-5. Just like Dark Cloud, Rogue Galaxy was an action role-playing game. The setting of the title is reminiscent of a mix of sci-fi and fantasy. You get a slight Star Wars vibe. Originally, the title started its development as the third part of the Dark Cloud series. Despite good ratings, Rogue Galaxy has flown a bit under the radar. The reason for this could be the very late western release in 2007. By then, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were already out, and Rogue Galaxy was also up against Final Fantasy XII, released that same year.
While Nintendo had Mario Golf, Mario Tennis and Co., the Everybody’s series reigned supreme on Sony consoles. While Everybody’s Golf and Everbody’s Tennis lack the star factor of the Nintendo options, they are almost identical in gameplay to the Mario games. Everybody’s Tennis in particular is fast multiplayer fun for which you don’t have to be interested in the actual sport. Incidentally, the same also applies to the Golf variant, which you can also find free of charge in the Premium catalogue.

In the meantime, Insomniac is known, among other things, for its grandiose Spider-Man games. In the past, however, they have produced some real bangers in other genres for Sony. Resistance 3 is a first-person shooter set in a post-apocalyptic world, whose predecessors appeared in the early days of the PlayStation 3. Part one was even a launch title for the console. And while these games are solid, it was the third installment where Insomniac really delivered. At that point, they were already an integral part of the Sony family.
Another studio that is now producing real gems for Sony is Sucker Punch. These were most recently responsible for Ghost of Tsushima. They also had their breakthrough with an open world adventure. here you take on the role of an involuntary superhero. The main character, Cole MacGrath, became so associated with the PlayStation that he also made it as a playable character in the platform fighter PlayStation All-Stars. Both PlayStation 3 installments in the series are available on a subscription basis and have held up really well.
A real insider tip. Produced in-house by Sony, this title is essentially an early part of the rogue-lite trend. You take on the role of one of numerous playable animals and are thrown into a Tokyo after the apocalypse. It is now a matter of surviving. You need food, water and get experience points. Then you have to find a partner and create a new generation of animal survivors together with them. These then receive better status points and thus the chance to penetrate further into the ruins of the former metropolis. An absurd concept that still inspires today with its entertaining style of play.
