Tasmania’s Liberal premier Jeremy Rockliff instructed state parliament on Wednesday that he’d help altering the date of Australia Day from 26 January to the final weekend in January.

The remark was in response to a query from Labor MP David O’Byrne, who needed to know if Mr Rockliff supported altering the date in keeping with former premier Peter Gutwein.

“Australia Day, it is a national conversation of course, and one that I am increasingly concerned is becoming increasingly divisive,” Mr Rockliff stated.

Mr Gutwein quit politics in April 2022, saying he’d “emptied the tank” after two years of managing the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr Rockliff took over the role shortly after.

On 3 May, a snap rally organised by Tasmanian Aboriginal protesters confronted Mr Rockliff on the streets of Hobart, saying he’d ignored their requests for a meeting since becoming premier.

Nala Mansell, campaign manager at the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre, said Mr Gutwein “had an open-door coverage” when it came to the Aboriginal community.

“We’ve requested to fulfill with Jeremy Rockliff however our requests have fallen on deaf ears, we have heard completely nothing,” she said at the rally.

“We are very dedicated to a pathway [towards] treaty,” Mr Rockliff responded.

Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania chairman Michael Mansell stated he welcomed Mr Rockliff’s feedback in parliament on altering the date.
