The Lufthansa subsidiary is making plans to buy new machines for long-haul flights. Industry insiders believe they know the die has been cast.

Boeing or Airbus? Dreamliner or A350? The question of the future of the Swiss long-haul fleet has been on the minds of industry insiders for some time. It’s about which plane will fly the passengers to destinations like San Francisco, Bangkok or Tokyo. The favorites are clear: the 787 – also known as the Dreamliner – from the US manufacturer Airbus, or the A350 from the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus.
It’s all about them: Swiss’s A340 aircraft will soon have to be replaced.Image: keystone
So far, Swiss has been silent on the subject. But the evidence is growing that the Lufthansa subsidiary is likely to tend towards one of the two solutions – the A350. It’s still just rumours. Because a Swiss spokeswoman says clearly on request: “No final decision has yet been made as to when and with which type of aircraft our Airbus A340 fleet will be replaced.”
But two privately operated industry portals are apparently certain that the decision is only a matter of form. The Facebook page “All about Aviation”, which is run by a Swiss cabin employee, reported this week that the airline will receive five A350-900s from parent company Lufthansa by the end of 2023. All A340 machines would leave the fleet, with one going to sister airline Edelweiss, as previously communicated.
The statement by Lufthansa boss Spohr
When asked, the flight attendant said he was referring to statements made by well-informed industry representatives. The other long-haul aircraft, the A330, would remain in service until 2030, when they would also be replaced by A350 models.
In addition, the European Airline Fleets website – whose operators do not identify themselves by name – has listed five A350-900s in the Swiss fleet plans. Last fall, the well-known industry blogger Sam Chui also reported that Swiss would receive the Airbus model from Lufthansa – based on a conversation with Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr.
“Swiss can grow with the fleet”

In turn, he said in an interview with CH Media this spring: “It’s clear to me: Swiss can continue to grow according to its ability to invest, including in the fleet.” However, no decision has yet been made. “We are constantly negotiating with the manufacturers Airbus and Boeing and have also bought new long-haul aircraft during the pandemic with the Boeing 787 and the Airbus A350.” But Swiss already has the most modern fleet in the Lufthansa Group at the moment, so he doesn’t rack his brains about it.
One way or another, the renewal of the fleet is expensive for Swiss: the A340-900 has a list price of 314 million dollars. And Boeing’s Dreamliner, depending on its size, between 250 and 340 million. You can count on a volume discount. But it will still be an investment of billions.
Will Swiss find enough staff?
The outsourcing of Swiss flights to the Latvian Air Baltic causes annoyance among the staff.Image: keystone
Today, Swiss has 12 Boeing 777 aircraft, which are relatively new and low in kerosene. There are also 14 Airbus A330-300s and five A340s – older, less efficient models, but whose cabins have only recently been modernized at a cost of several million. In addition, the A340 aircraft have more cargo capacity, which was a great advantage during the Corona crisis.
The other big question, however, will be whether Swiss will find enough staff for the new aircraft. Because it is still missing this at the moment, so it recently announced that it would outsource numerous flights to the Latvian Air Baltic in winter, which caused red heads among its own crew.
