Alzheimer’s and other diseases affect 5% of the total population (almost 50 million humans), according to the World Health Organization (WHO). This cognitive deterioration is still being studied in science. Even more so when older people are the most affected.
Several reports have suggested a direct relationship between mental health and physical activity, but not about the link between sedentary lifestyle and the dementia. Now, a study by researchers from the United States, published on July 13, 2022, has opted for such an approach.
In the words of neuropsychologist David Bartrés-Faz, consulted by El País, it is “one of the largest samples following 60-year-olds without dementia for 12 years.”
The participants of the investigation accessed the British database UK Biobank, an entity that investigates public health in the United Kingdom.
The tool allowed the follow-up and comparison of 146,651 people when they had a mean age of 64.5 years with their situation a decade later.
The respondents answered about the physical activity they performed and the time they spent sitting, either watching television or in front of the computer (it did not involve working hours).
Increased risk of dementia with more time in front of the TV
There is a consistent relationship between mental health and sedentary lifestyle, but not just any kind. The more time you spend in front of the television, there is a 40% higher risk of having dementia after a decade.
However, the result is not the same with computers, where the probability of having dementia down to 20%.
Neuroscientist David Raichlen acknowledges that it is complex to know why the computer is better than TV: “We know that cognitive demand can have benefits for the brain and it is possible that the use of the computer during leisure time is cognitively demanding in a way that counteracts the risks of sitting too long.
To confirm this, “both a more detailed investigation of the mechanisms, as well as designing interventions to determine causal relationships” would be required because the results “only (…) detect associations.”
Physical activity doesn’t matter.
The team brought together by Raichlen also investigated the conditioning factors between physical activity and a sedentary lifestyle (television or computer).
They concluded that “Those who spent more hours looking at the inch screen had a higher risk of dementia, regardless of the intensity of physical exercise.”
Bartrés-Faz explains the following: “If you spend hours in front of the television, the risk is not reduced if you go to the gym for an hour afterwards. It’s okay to go to the gym, but you should also stop watching TV”, recalls the principal investigator of the Barcelona Brain Health Initiative.
