Some people with student loans received a notice from their provider their next payment will be automatically taken from their bank account Sept. 1. But, according to the U.S. Department of Education and the loan provider, the message was sent in error.
CBS News reported federal student loan servicer Nelnet sent borrowers an email alerting them that payments would be automatically debited Sept. 1 and to check the website up to three days prior to make changes to that schedule.
It is unclear how many people received the messages.
Nelnet later sent an email apologizing for the message and saying it was an error.
“Earlier today we emailed you that your student loan payment would be automatically withdrawn from your bank account on September 1, 2022,” the message read. “Please disregard that email. It shouldn’t have been sent. We apologize for any confusion or concern it may have caused you.”
Neltnet said the services would send billing statements 21 days before a payment is due.
Federal student loans and interest have been on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic but are set to restart Sept. 1 unless extended by President Biden. The president is reportedly considering forgiving up to $10,000 per borrower but the plans have not been announced.
