A senior official in Taiwan’s military missile development program was found dead in his hotel room today.

Ou Yang Li-hsing57, was the deputy director of the National Institute of Science and Technology Chung-shan -owned by the island Army-, a position he had accessed this year to supervise several missile production projects, according to the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Postwhich in turn quotes the official Taiwanese news agency CNA.

Ou Yang was in the southern county of Pingtung, where he was going to participate in a cultural festival celebration.

The authorities believe that it was a heart attack and reported that there was no intrusion in the room. According to reports, Ou Yang’s family explained to the police that the deceased had a history of heart conditions and had already had a stent implanted.

Although the authorities insisted that there were no signs of injuries, struggles or any intrusion in his room, Ou Yang’s death has aroused interest among some regional media since it occurred in the context of the biggest crisis between Beijing and Taipei in recent yearswith several days of Chinese military maneuvers near the island in retaliation for the visit of the president of the US Legislature, Nancy Pelosi.

Taiwan denounced this Saturday that Chinese military ships and planes crossed the middle line of the formosan strait in a “possible simulated attack” within the military maneuvers announced after the visit to the island of Nancy Pelosi.

In a message published on its official Twitter account, the island’s Ministry of National Defense assures that the objective of this simulated attack would be a “high value asset”, without specifying more details in this regard.

In response, Taipei issued alerts and deployed air and naval patrols, also activating its land-based missile systems, as it did yesterday in the face of the “strong provocation” of the crossing of the middle line of the Strait by “several” Chinese ships and planes .

This imaginary line in the strait functions as an unofficial but tacitly respected border for China and Taiwan during the last decades.

The movements of the People’s Liberation Army (EPL, the Chinese Army) are part of the military maneuvers that it has been carrying out since Thursday and will last until Sunday in retaliation for Pelosi’s visit, and which have so far included live fire and the launch of long-range missiles.

These exercises take place in six zones around the island, one of them about 20 kilometers from the coast of Kaohsiung, the main city in southern Taiwan.

Although in recent years China has conducted other drills in the Taiwan Strait, this week’s are different because “they cover a larger area, involve more military elements and are expected to be highly effective,” Chinese defense experts quoted by local media reported.

Taiwan has described the Chinese military presence in the aforementioned areas as a “blockade”, and the Taiwanese president, Tsai Ing-wen called China’s “deliberately elevated military threat” “irresponsible.”
