All signals seem to point to a new tripartite in autumn. On Twitter, prime minister Xavier Bettel announced that he has invited the social partners to meetings next week.

Bilateral consultation meetings will therefore be organised between politicians and social partners next week in order to “hear their point of view on the current situation and to prepare the social dialogue this autumn”, according to the prime minister.

On 3 August, the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC) announced an annual inflation rate of 6.6% and projected that another wage indexation will be triggered before the end of the year.

The prime minister reacted by announcing that he wanted to wait for STATEC’s updated projections at the beginning of September before deciding whether or not a new tripartite would be organised.

A tripartite is a series of formal meetings between the government, employers and trade unions or workers’ representatives. In June, high inflation triggered wage indexation in response to soaring inflation. But this was postponed to 1 April 2023 and replaced by a tax credit.

It remains to be seen what the outcome of the bilateral consultation meetings will be.
