THE VICE PRESIDENT: Good night. Good night. Good night. (Applause.) Well, I do know our future is vibrant after I look at these younger leaders.

Governor Gavin Newsom, thanks for that introduction.

It is, of course, so good to be again in my house state of California. (Applause.)

And to everybody right here, on behalf of our administration, it’s my honor to formally welcome you to the ninth Summit of the Americas. (Applause.)

And, of course, we’re right here along with world leaders; native elected officers, together with our host metropolis Mayor Garcetti; enterprise and civil society leaders; and, of course, the President of the United States, Joe Biden. (Applause.)

As many of you could know, I’m a proud daughter of California. I represented this state as Attorney General and as a United States Senator. And I’m proud to name Los Angeles my house.

As Vice President, I’m happy to acknowledge, as the Governor talked about, California is a spot the place ambitions and desires change into actuality.

And so, all of us collect in Los Angeles this week for the Summit of the Americas with large ambitions — ambitions that started 28 years in the past in Miami at the first-ever Summit of the Americas, when our nations, collectively, set the Western Hemisphere on a brand new path — a path to develop our economies and enhance the lives of our individuals.
