Is Catnip the Universal Cure-All? Seems so, if you read the many catnip-claims-to-fame. Throughout history, catnip has been used as a remedy for just about every ailment or nuisance. Cats have known this all along. No wonder they have such a good time when they play with the leaves. Purrhaps, they’re mocking our ignorance.
Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a perennial member of the mint family that grows in temperate regions around the globe. It gets its name because of the peculiar effect it has on most felines. About 80% of all cats possess a genetic trait- a specific receptor above the palate that reacts to one ingredient- nepetalactone- whose scent causes them to act in that silly way. Most lions, pumas, and leopards react to catnip, but tigers don’t. After the initial frenzy, the inebriated cat stays relaxed for several hours.
Thankfully, catnip doesn’t provoke such foolish behavior in people, but it does appear to have many medicinal qualities. The ancient Greeks and Romans grew it for their cats, and in the 13th century, the English used it for cooking. They rubbed the leaves on meat, and sprinkled them in salads, sauces and stew.
Catnip tea was popular before Chinese tea was available. In 1597, written accounts appeared praising the herb as a relief for stomach aches, cramps, stress, and insomnia. The pioneers brought seeds to America. Early settlers believed that catnip could make kind people mean so the dried roots were fed to hangmen and executioners.
This feline-namesake herb has about ten different chemicals with healing properties. According to various holistic websites, catnip has also been used to reduce fevers, cough, and colic. Topically it’s been used for teething pain; as a compress for bruises, sprains and bug bites; as liniment for arthritis; as eyewash for allergies and bloodshot eyes; as hair rinse for scalp irritation and as salve for hemorrhoids.
At the “Colonial CVS,” catnip was the Midol for menstrual distress and the Ritalin for hyperactive kids. This herb is, allegedly, a source of Vitamins A and C so it had been used to treat scurvy. Some say, catnip can help eliminate toxins from the body, and oil in the plant is an appetite stimulant beneficial to anorexics.
Catnip as an Insect Repellent: Yes, catnip is a natural repellent to insects. Some gardeners plant it among their flowers to keep harmful bugs away. Scientists at Iowa State University found that nepetalactone also repels cockroaches. Catnip is also said to repel rats so a strong spray of it on crops might well deter rodents. A product called Nature’s Herbal Natural Mosquito & Insect Shield has a formula for people based on the Iowa State research. It contains catnip oil. The manufacturer says it’s ten times more powerful than DEET and safer. They say pesky bugs smell the carbon dioxide you give off with their hairy sensors. Nepetalactone in the spray fools them into detecting you’re a plant instead of a breathing being.
When cats chew catnip, it works as bug spray. Several years of research from Iwate University in Japan, with the newest study published in the June 14th edition of the journal iScience, suggests that when intoxicated cats play with (and damage) either catnip or a similar plant, silver vine, the plant’s leaves actually give off higher levels of chemical compounds that do repel mosquitoes.
Cats engage in four main behaviors with either catnip or silver vine: licking, chewing, rubbing and rolling. From earlier studies, the Japanese scientists already learned that rubbing and rolling in catnip or silver vine transfer iridoids- the chemicals that trigger the cat’s endorphin rush to its fur and also repel mosquitoes.
“I Prefer My Catnip Martini Shaken, Not Stirred”: In the newer study, the Japanese scientists looked at what happened on the chemical level to leaves that were chewed by cats or crumpled by hand. Analysis showed that damage inflicted by both cats and humans caused the leaves to increase their release of various iridoids.
The team then tested out these different chemical cocktails to see how cats and mosquitoes each reacted to them. When given trays with intact and damaged silver vine leaves, cats spent more time licking and rolling around on the damaged leaves. Even when researchers synthesized the chemicals found in these leaves, the cats still spent more time with the damaged-leaf cocktail.
The cats’ cocktail preference differed for damaged catnip leaves and damaged silver vine leaves. For catnip, the feline-desired mixture was dominated by nepectalactone, and for silver vine, the cats preferred an even balance of five different chemicals.
To compare the insect-repellant properties of the mixtures, the researchers filled a transparent box with mosquitoes and placed a shallow dish inside to see how quickly the mosquitoes fled when the various cocktails were poured into the dish. The mosquitoes “got out of Dodge” faster with the nepetalactone-dominant cocktail of damaged catnip leaves.
Catnip and silver vine could be beneficial by protecting humans from insects as well. The species of mosquito used in this study transmits roundworms to cats and dogs, and also spreads human viruses, like dengue. Other mosquito species would probably be repelled by these two plants. It’s too bad dogs aren’t inclined to roll around in catnip. Think of how many cases of heartworm could be prevented.
