More than 2.5 million pilgrims participated in the Pilgrimage 2022 to La Negrita, as the Patron Saint of Costa Rica is popularly called, as well as in the various activities carried out to celebrate the Virgin of the Angels.

In the central activity, the Eucharist for its 387th anniversary, held this August 2 in the square of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, in Cartago, the Bishop of Alajuela, Monsignor Bartolomé Buigues, criticized the gradual loss of principles and values ethics in this Central American nation.

In his homily, Buigues indicated that “technological growth has been extraordinary, but the gradual loss of ethical principles and values is also very great. We have neglected the fundamentals, what can give us identity and meaning, cohesion as a people.

He argued that we are going through a real crisis in the model of life and – he added – the conformism with which part of society views it is surprising.

The bishop of Alajuela spoke before the hierarchs of the main powers of the Tico State, except for President Rodrigo Chaves, absent due to AH1N1 influenza, as well as hundreds of faithful gathered in the square of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, declared Patron of Costa Rica on September 24, 1824.

On the occasion of the 387th anniversary of the discovery of the image of La Negrita, Buigues affirmed that in our society there is evidence of a project of cultural transformation, of social reengineering that aims to change ethical paradigms, replace a social order based on the foundations of Christian humanism .

After two years without carrying out the pilgrimage due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year the pilgrimage of devotees returned in the most massive religious activity in this country, in which every August 1 and 2 around one and a half million pilgrims walk paying or asking for favors, or simply by faith, towards the National Sanctuary of La Negrita.

On the other hand, 70 percent of Costa Ricans rate the work of President Rodrigo Chaves as good or very good, according to an opinion study by the University of Costa Rica (UCR), released this Wednesday by the University Weekly.

Carried out by the Development Observatory Research Center (CIOdB) of the UCR, the study consulted 518 people via cell phone between the previous July 11 and 20, two and a half months after Chaves took office, has a level of confidence of 95 percent and a margin of error of 4.3 percent.

If seven out of 10 interviewees rated the Costa Rican president’s management as good or very good, 21 percent considered it regular and only seven percent gave a negative assessment.
