Parliament of India elected the country's new vice president – Up Jobs News

Dhankhar, the former governor of West Bengal, got 528 votes, while Alva, 80, got 182, announced Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) secretary general and vice president election official Utpal Kumar Singh.

The numbers were in favor of Dhankhar as the ruling BJP enjoys an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha and has 91 members in the Rajya Sabha (Upper House), the Press Trust of India agency reported.

Dhankhar, 71, will succeed M Venkaiah Naidu, whose term ends on August 10.

In the count, 725 of the 780 deputies voted, for 92.94 percent of the total votes, of which 15 ballots were declared null.

Voter turnout was lower than the 98.2 percent recorded in the 2017 election, when M Venkaiah Naidu was elected Vice President.

The new vice president was linked to the Janata Dal Party and the Indian National Congress Party and joined the BJP in 2008, after a hiatus of almost a decade in which he concentrated on his legal career, practicing as a lawyer in the Supreme Court and member of the International Court of Arbitration in Paris for three years.

He championed issues related to the backward classes, such as the politically significant Jat community in Rajasthan, which participated in large numbers in the year-long farmers’ protests against the three sector laws introduced by the government in 2020.

On August 11, Dhankhar will be sworn in, one day after incumbent M Venkaiah Naidu leaves office.

The Vice President of India, who also serves as the head of the Rajya Sabha, is elected by an Electoral College made up of members from both Houses of Parliament on a proportional representation system.
