A North Huntingdon man was elated, however humble Monday after receiving a Quilt of Valor recognizing his army service.
“I just think there’s a lot more people that are deserving,” stated Ron Ickes, 81, of Biddle.
Sally Strait, a member of Norwin Quilters, introduced Ickes, an Army veteran, with the quilt throughout a brief ceremony on the Jeannette American Legion. The Quilts of Valor Foundation awards handmade quilts to service members or veterans touched by warfare.
Members of Norwin Quilters used pink, white and blue material to say thanks for Ickes’ service, sacrifice and valor.
“This quilt is an expression of gratitude meant to thank and comfort you,” Strait stated.
Ickes, previously of Jeannette, served in an remoted, mountainous space of Germany from 1961 to 1964. Afterwards, he stated he turned a state police trooper and retired as a legal investigator on the Greensburg station in 1996.
He met Strait at Brush Creek Lutheran Church in North Huntingdon the place she discovered of his service with the Army. The Norwin Quilters’ roughly 30 members took on the venture, assembling it block by block. Strait stated the group has awarded a number of different veterans with handmade quilts.
“It’s a way to honor the veterans, tell them they’re not forgotten,” she stated. “He’s a very deserving man.”
Ickes was joined by his spouse Kerry and several other supporters in the course of the ceremony. Quilts of Valor Foundation was began in 2003 and has particular necessities for the creation of quilts, in addition to labeling and nomination of recipients.
