At the beginning of July, the federal government announced that the former state care center in the municipality of Kindberg im Mürztal should in future be used for refugees who need medical care. The local residents fear that it could become mass accommodation and started a petition – more on this in Petition against Kindberg refugee home (August 12, 2022).
The federal government wants to rent a former state care center
On Thursday there was a first meeting between the responsible representatives of the Federal Care Agency (BBU) and the municipality of Kindberg. According to Mayor Christian Sander, there are plans to accommodate refugees in the former state care center as early as next year. There should be space for a maximum of 250 people. The BBU sticks to the plans. The federal government will rent the building, there is no contract yet.
Uncertainty in Kindberg
According to the federal government, refugees who need medical help are mainly to be accommodated in Kindberg. But there is no guarantee, criticizes the mayor of Kinderberg: “There are no legal exceptions for this situation, so people say it will only be vulnerable people who will come. Then the community would be more behind it. We just assume that asylum seekers will come and that it will then be like in other cities, in Leoben for example, that many of these asylum seekers will go through the city and that will change our togetherness.
Many questions remain unanswered
The municipality has already collected 1,500 signatures in the form of a petition. They want to make it clear that they are committed to humane housing for refugees. And that is not the case in the building from 1900, which is in dire need of renovation. In addition, says Sander: “People don’t understand where the employees, i.e. the supervisors for this facility, should come from. Employees that we miss ourselves.”
Up to 250 people will find accommodation in the former state care center in the future. The mayor of Kindberg, Christian Sander, says the project will continue to be fought across all factions.
