Australia’s oldest stays have been buried despite an eleventh-hour legal challenge, leaving traditional house owners “outraged”. 

The 42,000-year-old stays of Mungo Man, Mungo Lady and 106 different Indigenous skeletons, which have been eliminated within the Sixties and Seventies with out the permission of traditional house owners, have been proposed to be re-interred at unmarked websites within the Willandra Lakes area of south-west New South Wales. 

A gaggle of 18 elders representing the realm’s three Indigenous teams, the Mutthi Mutthi, Ngiyampaa, and Barkandji-Paakantyi, filed an injunction earlier this week to forestall the burial.

An announcement the federal Department of Agriculture, Water, and Environment on Tuesday stated the re-burial had been delayed till the incoming federal minister had assessed the appliance. 

However, the division stated it had since been suggested the stays had been buried.

“It was the department’s expectation, based on communication with the NSW Government, that the re-burial would not be occurring,” the assertion reads.

Mutthi Mutthi man Jason Kelly stated he was devastated by the choice. 

“We want to know how this has happened and who is responsible for this desecration.

“This is simply so disrespectful on all fronts and goes towards the desires of lots of of previous and current elders who’ve pleaded for a culturally-appropriate re-burial for our ancestors.” 

Mr Kelly has called on the NSW Environment Minister James Griffin to investigate how the burial went ahead. 

“We name on the minister to inform us the place the stays at the moment are buried, in order that we are able to present Mungo Man and Mungo Lady with a culturally-appropriate public memorial on nation.” 

Paakantyi man Michael Young said First Nations people across the country had been disrespected by the action. 

“We are nonetheless getting our heritage destroyed at an alarming charge by organisations and now authorities officers,” he stated. 

Mr Young said those responsible should be held accountable for the “destruction”. 

“I feel these individuals have accomplished a legal act, a legal act towards Indigenous individuals,” he said.

“You do not take it on your self to destroy 42,000-year-old human stays, these individuals have gotten to be prosecuted.” 

A Heritage NSW spokesperson said an investigation was under way into the removal of some remains from where they were being stored.
