SYDNEY — Getting your pet to a vet is now a bit easier.
Heather Woodin, director of programs and administration with the Nova Scotia SPCA, said the Cape Breton SPCA Veterinary Hospital used to provide services to low-income families. However, due to the backlogs and wait times caused by both the pandemic and a regional shortage of qualified workers, anyone who needs to have their dog or cat vaccinated, spayed or neutered, or treated for fleas or ticks can now book an appointment at the Sydney clinic.
Meeting demand
“We’re happy to be able to help with some of this demand,” said Woodin.
“We were hearing from adopters and pet owners so that’s where we’re getting our information — we’re hearing from the communities about how long they’re waiting to get their pet in for various services and we’re seeing that reflected in the animals that we’re receiving. We use a lot of local veterinary services ourselves so we’ve experienced a lot of that overwhelming wait ourselves at times, so we’re just happy to be able to alleviate that somewhat.”
The SPCA is also helping with its Nova Scotia SPCA College of Animal Welfare. In 2021, the charitable organization launched a veterinary assistant to train people who help run the business side of clinics and hospitals, as well as help handle pets.
First class
On Tuesday, the first class of eight veterinary assistants graduated from the Dartmouth-based independent post-secondary institution. In September, the college is starting a veterinary technology program to train people to essentially act as nurses by aiding with surgery, emergency care and a range of other procedures.
Woodin said the SPCA isn’t trying to compete but rather wants to fill a gap in services.
“The Cape Breton SPCA Veterinary Hospital wouldn’t exist without the partnerships we have have with local veterinarians in the communities. We have emergencies, we use local veterinary services as well, so it’s definitely a partnership and we appreciate all the local veterinarians and they’ve been working really hard throughout this pandemic as well,” she said.
“And any profits are reinvested into the SPCA for programs that support the community, so when you utilize our services you are helping animals in need.”
