Mona McSharry finished fifth in the 100m breaststroke final at the European Swimming Championships in Rome.
The Olympic finalist was in fourth at the turn and battled for a place on the podium but was squeezed out by 0.24 of a second.
Italy took gold and silver through Benedetta Pilato (1:05.97) and Lisa Angiolini with bronze going to Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte. Another Lithuanian, Kotryna Teterevkova was fourth.
McSharry’s time of 1:07.14 was 0.70 of a second slower than her semi-final performance, which would have been enough for bronze.
“I put high expectations on myself and that’s not where I wanted to be tonight,” the 21-year-old told RTÉ Sport afterwards.
“It would have been nice to go another 1:06. But that’s the way the cards fall sometimes. I did all I could.
“I’ve been struggling with the back 50 and I was trying to work better on that.
“If you had asked me the time before I saw it I probably would have guessed faster. It felt better but you can’t predict it sometimes.”
The Sligo woman will be back in the pool tomorrow morning for the 200m breaststroke heats.
