Lima.- The Latin American Thoracic Association, ALAT, brought together medical experts from all over Latin America and the world at its 15th Congress with the aim of disseminating up-to-date scientific knowledge of different respiratory pathologies, including Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, COPD.
The event that took place last month and had the GSK Laboratory as one of its sponsors, who spoke about current issues such as: Asthma control through adherence to regular proactive treatment and COPD.
Among the specialists who participated on behalf of GSK were Dr. Gur Levy, a pulmonologist and leading respiratory medical expert in GSK Emerging Markets, Dr. Emilio Pizzichini, respiratory medical expert in GSK Emerging Markets, and Dr. Patricio Jimenez, Bronchopulmonary Internist and respiratory medical adviser GSK Chile, Peru and Ecuador.

Asthma is the most common chronic inflammatory respiratory disease in the world, with a higher incidence during winter and related to low temperatures. According to the WHO, it is estimated that, during 2019, asthma affected 262 million people causing the death of 461,000 asthmatics in the world.
In Latin America, asthma is a prevalent problem in the region, the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) and other publications have shown an increase in prevalence, as well as deaths due to poor asthma control, especially in countries without industrialized.
Due to the diversity in the region, there is a profound variability in the burden of asthma, this is multifactorial: genetic burden, perinatal exposures, diet, obesity, work consumption, pollutants, stress or parasitic or microbial infections.
This chronic disease that affects both children and adults, the pathways that lead air to the lungs are narrowed by inflammation, causing symptoms such as cough, wheezing, dyspnea and chest tightness; its triggers vary from one person to another among which are: dust, smoke, gases, weather changes, pollen, animal fur, perfumes, among others.
Although this is a disease that cannot be cured, adequate, regular and proactive treatment with inhaled medications can help control the disease and give the patient a better quality of life, hence the importance of the patient being properly informed about their disease and the correct control of these that involve them.
