Almost a year after its sanction, this Saturday the front labeling law will come into force that forces food and non-alcoholic beverage companies to include a seal on the packaging of products that contain high levels of sugar, fat or salt in your formula. According to the regulations of the law, the rule will begin to apply to large manufacturers, while in February 2023 it will be the turn of SMEs in the sector. But in fact, the main companies in the sector -Molinos Río de la Plata, Mondelez, Danone, Mastellone and practically all the dairy companies- they requested and obtained an extension from the Ministry of Health to add the black octagons, starting next year. The extension also reached the supermarkets’ own brands, arguing that these are products that are manufactured by SMEs, even if they use the Carrefour, Coto, Jumbo or Changomás brands.
At the moment, some of the few companies that will begin to remove products with the new labels from their production lines from today are the manufacturers of soft drinks. In Coca-Cola they confirmed that their drinks that are part of the Care Prices plan will begin to be sold with black octagons, Meanwhile in Pepsi specified that they requested the extension for some of their products, while others will adapt to the new standard from tomorrow.
In all cases, the validity of the law does not mean that automatically the products reached will change their label. The merchandise that was already manufactured with the old containers and that is in the warehouses of the supplier companies and in the distribution centers of the supermarkets will continue to be sold until stocks are exhausted.
“This weekend it is very difficult to see an octagon on the gondolas, because most of the companies were given the extension. To this is added that the channels are overstocked with merchandise and in some items there is more than a month of stock on the street”, they explained in a supermarket chain.
For their part, the food companies explained that behind the extension requests is the objective of gain time to recalibrate the formula of some foods. “We are testing some changes in the formulas to be able to eliminate some black octagon but without sacrificing the flavor of the product,” they recognized in a food company.
At least initially the front labeling law enjoys consumer support. According to a study by the consulting firm ShopApp -which works through an application that brings together a panel of 10,000 consumers-, the level of knowledge of the standard reaches 64%, and among those who know it, 68% agree and 14% oppose.
ShopApp also highlights that two out of three people say they will change their purchasing habits because of the law. “The barrier is found in the three seals. 49% of people say they will abandon the purchase with 1 to 3 stamps. Saturated fats and sugars are the labels that raise the most concern, followed by sodium”, explained Juana Merlo, partner and founder of ShopApp.
According to the study, women show a more generalized concern and attention towards nutritional care. “They read the labels more and more easily abandon their habits in the face of products that do not meet their nutritional expectations. However, they are also more sensitive to messages. anchored in low calories. Men are more inclined to perceive indulgent products as healthy, and show greater polarization: many of them would not abandon their buying habits, but those who would, do so in a more radical way, ”explain ShopApp.
The labeling only covers processed or ultra-processed products. Packages, cans and bottles. Leave out pizzerias, restaurants, delicatessens, bakeries and all non-industrialized food.
As part of the regulation, some products will be excepted. Common sugar, vegetable oils, nuts and common table salt are not required to have the warning stamp on the main face.
The black stamps that warn about “excess sugars”, “excess total fats”, “excess saturated fats”, “excess calories” and “excess sodium”.
Manufacturers are also required to report the presence of sweeteners and caffeine in food and beverages covered by law. In the first case, a legend must be included with a rectangular stamp indicating that it is a product “not recommended for children”. And if it has caffeine, it should say: “avoid in children”.
