UCP leadership hopeful Danielle Smith took aim at comments made by outgoing Premier Jason Kenney on the proposed Sovereignty Act during his weekly radio show.

In a statement Sunday, Smith said the premier’s comments were “premature, ill-informed and disrespectful” after Kenney took to the airwaves dismissing Smith’s campaign as “nuts” and that advancing the Alberta sovereignty act would make the province a “laughingstock” in Canada.
In the statement, Smith said that the premier and other “experts” should reserve their opinion on the legislation until they have the opportunity to read it.
“I would also urge the premier to focus on being a voice for party unity and to respect our party’s democratic leadership process that allows members to select our leader in an open and transparent selection process without interference from the acting premier and leader of the party,” said Smith.

Smith, considered the front-runner in the party’s leadership race, has promised to introduce legislation that would allow the province to ignore federal laws, court rulings and regulatory decisions opposed by the provincial legislation.
“Albertans are tired of watching Justin Trudeau and Ottawa continuously run over the rights and freedoms of Albertans and they want a leader who will stand and defend our province without apology — and that is exactly the leader I intend to be.”
Kenney said such a “flagrantly unlawful” bill would almost certainly not receive the lieutenant governor’s approval or survive a court challenge should it pass in the legislature.
“It would never become law. Alberta would become a laughingstock, with the lieutenant governor doing her job, which is to ensure the law, the Constitution, is respected,” he said.

Kenney cited the published analysis of Howard Anglin, his former principal secretary, who has referred to the proposal as a “political and legal hoax” that undermines investor confidence.
“We should be talking about real, practical ways to fight unfair Ottawa policies, to fight for a stronger Alberta and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” Kenney said.
The premier declined to answer Saturday when asked about growing UCP caucus support for Smith, who this week received the backing of two more cabinet ministers, or the tone of the party’s leadership race.
“I’m just not going to delve into that, it’s not my job. I’m not going to get into being a colour commentator on the leadership election,” he said.
In May, when announcing his resignation, Kenney said he would remain as premier until a new leader is chosen.
On Saturday, the premier told listeners he was open to staying on as Calgary-Lougheed MLA after the leadership is decided in October.
“It is my intention to stay on in the (legislature) for at least a period of time,” he said. “I don’t want to force a byelection for sure, but part of that will be up to the next leader.”
