For those of us who are dog owners, many of us know and celebrate how much a part of the family they are. We not only shower them with love, but many of our four-legged loved ones receive holiday and birthday gifts like everyone else in the family. Some even go on our family vacations.
With International Dog Day coming up Aug. 26, we all have another opportunity to share with our dogs just how special they are to us. And without a doubt, they will have earned any gifts or special treats they receive on this day, not just for what they bring to our lives but also for how they make us better people.
Still, dogs will be dogs, and it’s important to remember that dog owners are responsible for whatever it is that their dogs may do – be it chasing, biting or, yes, pooping in public. Whenever your dog does its business in your neighborhood, at a park or along our 55-plus miles of trails, please be a good neighbor and clean up after them. Yes, our officers have more important work to do than act as the poop police, but please don’t put our public servants in that position. Just do the right thing and pick it up yourselves.
City Notes:Whether traveling or staying in New Albany, parks near and far worthy of visit
Even more importantly, please remember that your dog (and any other animal) must be under your control at all times when out in the public. The easiest way to ensure this is to use a leash while you’re out and about. Leashes are not required on our trails and sidewalks, but they are recommended because you could be cited if your dog scares others while off leash or not under your control.
If you want to exercise your dog off leash, a great option is Rocky Fork Metro Park, which has a nearly 2-acre dog park. When it comes to city-owned parks, such as Rose Run Park and our city-owned neighborhood parks, dogs are permitted but must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
Finally, there are some area parks where dogs are not permitted. Bevelhymer Park, Thompson Park and Wexner Community Park are under the jurisdiction of New Albany Parks & Recreation, which does not allow pets in any of its parks or facilities. Service dogs are the only exception. We appreciate your cooperation.
Thanks in advance for doing your part to be a responsible dog owner, and don’t forget to show yours how important they are Aug. 26.
