The volume international banking assets in the second quarter of 2022 decreased 3.6 per cent from a quarter ago to MOP 2,206.0 billion (US$272.9 billion), data published by the Monetary Authority of Macau (AMCM) shows.
Within this total, external assets dropped by 6.2 per cent from the previous quarter to MOP1,652.4 billion, whereas local assets in foreign currencies increased by 5.1 per cent to MOP553.6 billion.
As of the end of June 2022, the share of international assets in total banking assets decreased to 85.5 per cent from 86.0 per cent at end-March2022.
The Hong Kong dollar, the US dollar, the renminbi and other foreign currencies accounted for 32.7 per cent, 44.0 per cent, 18.7 per cent and 3.8 per cent of total international assets, respectively.
Meanwhile, total international liabilities decreased by 3.3 per cent from three months ago to MOP2,151.0 billion, with external liabilities fellquarter-to-quarter by 6.6 per cent to MOP1,273.7 billionwhile local liabilities in foreign currencies expanded by 1.9 per cent to MOP877.3 billion.
As of the end of June, claims on Mainland China and Hong Kong occupied 43.2 per cent and 26.1 per cent of total external assets. Meanwhile, claims on Portuguese-speaking countries and countries along the “Belt and Road” occupied respective shares of 1.0 per centand 9.6 per cent.
On external liabilities, Hong Kong and Mainland China accounted for 39.6 per cent and 38.1 per cent of the total, respectively. Portuguese-speaking countries and countries along the “Belt and Road” represented 0.5 per centand 8.2 per centrespectively.
