The Black Caps were denied a Twenty20 clean sweep against the West Indies in Jamaica as the hosts saved their best performance for the last outing of the three-match series.
Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to bat, but his innings of 24 off 27 balls summed up his side’s efforts as they posted just 145-7 from their 20 overs.
The pitch at Sabina Park in Kingston was the same one used for matches one and two, where the Black Caps posted imposing totals of 185-5 and 215-5, but they struggled to get to grips with it this time out.

Even though the surface appeared to be sluggish while they batted, New Zealand’s spinners couldn’t control the game as they did in match two, where they combined to take 7-66 from 12 overs to give their team an insurmountable 2-0 lead.

This time around the 10 overs from Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi featured just a single wicket and went for 80 runs as the West Indies eased home with an over to spare.
Openers Brandon King and Shamarh Brooks combined for a partnership of 102 runs off 79 balls and made 53 off 35 and 56 not out off 59 respectively in the eight-wicket win.
Glenn Phillips was the standout batsman for the Black Caps, making 41 off 26, but Kane Williamson and Devon Conway failed to fire despite spending significant time at the crease, making 24 off 27 and 21 off 17.
Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein took 2-28 in his return to the West Indies’ lineup, while seamer Odean Smith took 3-29, his best effort of the series.

Glenn Phillips was the only Black Caps batsman to get going in the third T20 against the West Indies.
The loss halted the Black Caps’ all-format winning streak at a record-equalling 13 matches – three one-day internationals and three T20s against Ireland, two T20s and an ODI against Scotland and two T20s against the Netherlands and two in this series.
They previously won 13 matches in a row at home in 2017 and 2018 – two tests, three ODIs and two T20s against the West Indies and five ODIs and a T20 against Pakistan.
The big moment
Once the Black Caps failed to pick up any wickets in the power play, all eyes were going to be on leg-spinner Sodhi, who likes to build on early pressure to claim scalps during the middle. His first over went for just four runs, but his second went for 19 – 18 of them from three sixes – and the asking rate was less than a run a ball from there.
Best with the bat
Phillips has called Sabina Park home with the Jamaica Tallwahs in the Caribbean Premier League and he looked at home again in this match, making 41 off 26 as the only Black Caps batsman to really get going. His dismissal with three overs to go was the only blemish, leaving two fresh batsmen at the crease with a big finish needed.
Best with the ball
Lockie Ferguson was the only New Zealand bowler who didn’t come in for some tap, conceding just 16 runs from his four overs, but he probably would have been happy to go for a few more in exchange for some early wickets.
The big picture
With the series win already secured, the Black Caps’ won’t get too down about this loss. Their T20 squad looks settled two months out from the World Cup in Australia and they will have a chance for a final tune-up against Bangladesh and Pakistan in Christchurch in early October. Next up are three ODIs in Barbados, starting Thursday [6am NZ time].
