The Westpac rescue helicopter lands at the scene of a crash on State Highway 1, between Rolleston and Burnham.
Seven people have been injured – two critically – in a crash involving a St John health shuttle on State Highway 1 southwest of Christchurch.
The crash between the shuttle and a ute happened on Main South Road (SH1) between Rolleston and Burnham about 9.30am on Friday.
The ute was towing a trailer, which went into the path of the St John vehicle heading the other way.
The impact sent the shuttle into a tree.
Seven people, including all six in the shuttle, had been taken to hospital: two in critical condition, three in serious condition and two in moderate condition, including the driver of the ute.
I can also confirm the driver of the other vehicle was in a moderate condition.
Six ambulances, four clinical managers, one rapid response vehicle and one helicopter responded to the crash, a St John spokesperson said.

The state highway was closed near the intersection with Walkers Rd. Detours were available.
A Stuff reporter who happened upon the scene said several people were being treated on the road and firefighters were trying to get someone out of the shuttle.
She could hear someone screaming.
The vehicle looked to be the Ashburton Health Shuttle, which transports people to Christchurch for health appointments, she said.
“It looks very serious,” she said.
The Westpac rescue helicopter had also been dispatched.
