This Saturday, August 6, with only one day left before his inauguration, the elected president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, announced four other ministers who will be part of his cabinet. These are the officials who will be at the head of the ministries of Mines, Interior, Work and Sport.
First, Petro reported that the mMinister of Mines and Energy will be the academic, Irene Vélez. Although this name had sounded for the Ministry of Science and Technology, this Saturday the incoming president confirmed his decision through social networks.
“I have appointed Irene Vélez as Minister of Mines and Energy. Philosopher from Unal with a doctorate in Political Geography from Copenhagen. She is a woman with extensive experience in the environmental sector and who will have the arduous task of leading the transition to a non-extractivist economy,” Gustavo Petro wrote on his Twitter account.
Following that, the president-elect confirmed that at the head of the Ministry of Labor will be Gloria Inés Ramírez. The incoming president highlighted the official’s journey as a defender of human rights, as well as her fight for the vindication of Colombian workers.
“Gloria Inés Ramírez, a defender of human rights and the demands of workers, will be at the Ministry of Labor. She has been a woman who has fought for women’s rights and gender equality, ”Petro announced.
On the other hand, the rumor was confirmed María Isabel Urrutia as Minister of Sport.
“The renowned athlete María Isabel Urrutia will be our Minister of Sports. She promoted the professionalization of athletes during her time in Congress and she will be a representative of the Afro-Colombian people in the cabinet, ”Petro announced.
It is worth remembering that the athlete’s name had been around for a couple of months when she was pre-nominated to hold the position in a kind of short list released by the journalist Alejandro Pino Calad.
The executive director of the Colombian Association of Professional Soccer Players (Acolfutpro), Carlos González Puche and the deputy director of the IDRD of Bogotá, Javier Suárez Alonso, were also nominated in said list.
Finally, Gustavo Petro assured that his interior minister will be Alfonso Prada, who served as debate chief during the campaign of the president-elect and Francia Márquez for the Presidency of Colombia.
“Alfonso Prada will be the Minister of the Interior. He has been a Councilman and Representative to the House. He will be responsible for relations with the legislature and for drawing up policies on human rights, citizen participation and territorial planning, ”the incoming president wrote on his Twitter account.
