CLEVELAND (AP) — Franmil Reyes, who started the season hitting fourth for the Cleveland Guardians, was placed on the transfer list Saturday.
The Guardians had shipped the 27-year-old outfielder and designated hitter to Triple-A Columbus this week after hitting .213 with nine homers and 104 strikeouts in 263 at-bats.
The Dominican hit 37 homers in 2019, when he played for Cleveland and San Diego. He racked up 30 homers and set a career high of 85 RBIs in 2021.
He is making $4.55 million as part of a one-year deal and was eligible for salary arbitration.
“Franmil wasn’t finding the fastballs, and the corners he hit were easy,” manager Terry Francona said. “There weren’t a lot of home runs. It was something very difficult. We want our young players to play, and this opens up the opportunity for someone else to sign him.”
The Guardians have seven days to trade, release or send Reyes to the minors.
