A test case is being sought – hundreds of entrepreneurs were recently asked by a lawyer to make compensation payments of 190 euros
Vienna (OTS) – Numerous warning letters from a lawyer in relation to Google Fonts are currently causing uncertainty in many companies. Even after the recent announcement that no further warnings would be sent, there is still anger among those who have already received such letters. Alfred Harl, Chairman of the Association for Management Consulting, Accounting and IT (UBIT) of the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKÖ), clearly states: “Data protection yes, but abuse no! Our member companies are not milking cows for quick money. Honest entrepreneurship cannot and must not be punished, certainly not through mass mailings by lawyers and the Americanization of the administration of justice. We are available to all affected member companies with advice and information.
For this reason, the UBIT trade association supports the attempt to take up a test case and calls on affected member companies to contact their trade association if complaints are brought. At the same time, the data protection authority has meanwhile initiated an ex officio investigation procedure against Google for Google Fonts to clarify the facts.
The background: Numerous people affected, including many member companies, recently approached their legal representative because they were confronted with a demand for settlement payments from a lawyer from Lower Austria. The accusation: those affected had used free Google fonts on their homepage, which forwarded the IP addresses of visitors to the Google server. A client of the lawyer sees her rights violated, which is why the lawyer is now demanding damages on a broad scale on her behalf. Settlement payments of 190 euros each plus legal fees were demanded, and according to media reports the lawyer has now stopped the wave of dismissals.
