In hours before the new Economy Minister Sergio Massanamed his number two in the portfolio, which also includes the areas of Production and Agriculture, the name of Gabriel Rubinstein was confirmed to THE NATION from the environment of the now former president of the Chamber of Deputies.
The one chosen to accompany the leader of the Renewal Front In his new task within the government of Alberto Fernández, he spent several times in public office. Rubinstein studied Economics at the UBA and took postgraduate courses in Macroeconomics, Microeconomics and Economic Growth at the Institute for Economic and Social Development (IDES). In addition, he was a member of the sovereign risk committee DCR-Fitch Ratings, advisor to former Minister of Economy Roberto Lavagna on monetary policy issues, executive director of the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange and representative of the BCRA.
In the last hours, when his new position was still unknown, the director of GRA Consultora spoke about the arrival of the Tigrense to the Cabinet and was optimistic. In radio statements, he assured that “the inflationary scenario can improve” with Massa at the head of the Economy portfolio, after the resignation of Martín Guzmán a week ago and the passage of Silvina Batakis for the position, who was in office for 25 days.
“I believe that there may be an improvement scenario, which can go from an inflation of 7.8% to 5 and eventually 4 in a few months., as if to get to the electoral stage more calmly, let’s say it like that”, declared the future Deputy Minister of Economy last Tuesday. However, he stressed that remaining calm with these figures would be an attitude “of significant mediocrity” because this year the general rate of inflation is expected to be around 90%.
So, on the arrival of the new official to the Cabinet, he said: “This would not be a scenario, let’s say, very attractive electorally for the Front of All, there is the doubt or the possibility that Massa would have to do something forceful”.
After that, and even before the economic measures that were announced on Wednesday, Rubinstein spoke about the adjustment that must be carried out and said: “You have to understand, and it is something that is not understood, although it is the ABC of an adjustment in a moment like this, when no one wants Argentine bonds or pesos anymore, that we must have a totally balanced fiscal situation”.
Then, he gave a reading of the view of the hardest Kirchnerism on the subject and added: “There is a perception that gets into Kirchnerism, but not only in the Kirchnerism, that the fiscal adjustment is recessive and detrimental to the people, but there is no notion that inflation acts as a tax. So that is being paid, it is not that it is not paid. It is about changing the subject and ensuring that instead of each one of the Argentines paying it, some pay it and others do not.”.
