Driving force and goal scorer: Zurich’s veteran Blerim Dzemaili turned things around.Image: keystone
Only one of the three remaining Swiss teams in the European Cup celebrates a win in the playoff first leg. The champions Zurich travel to Scotland with a 2-1 home win in the second leg to the Hearts. Meanwhile, YB and FC Basel have to improve after defeats if they want to make it into the Conference League.

FC Zurich – Heart of Midlothian 2:1
In the Europa League playoffs, FC Zürich travels into the second leg at the Heart of Midlothian with a minimal lead. Despite their superiority, Zurich only win 2-1 in St.Gallen.
In less than three minutes, FCZ scored more goals in exile in St.Gallen than in five Super League games combined. In the 32nd minute Adrian Guerrero scored with a volley after a tee shot by Yanick Brecher and a failed header from a Scottish defender, in the 34th minute Blerim Dzemaili hammered a deflected low cross from Guerrero from twelve meters into the net.

167 seconds were squeezed between the two goals of FCZ, in which Donis Avdijaj and Bogdan Wjunnyk formed a two-man attack and outside runner Guerrero was able to develop nicely thanks to the back three in defence. Contrary to the course of the game, Zurich were behind before the double strike. And that, although the Hearts had hardly appeared offensively.
In the initially pouring rain, Scotland’s third-strongest force benefited from an unnecessary foul by Ole Selnaes after 20 minutes. The Norwegian stepped on his opponent’s foot in a not too dangerous scene in the penalty area, Lawrence Shankland pocketed the penalty due. The Hearts were primarily busy with defensive work before and after this scene.

Judging by the strength ratios – the Hearts only became decisive when the FCZ withdrew – the FCZ did not get enough out of their superiority, especially since the opponent’s defense was weakened by an injury after seven minutes. Substitute Fabian Rohner missed the last chance to score another goal from a multitude of promising opportunities after a dangerous counterattack in the 90th minute. “That was our shortcoming: that we missed the chances for the third goal in the second half,” Foda said. Blerim Dzemaili described the game after the final whistle to the “SRF” as the “best performance of the season”. Franco Foda was similarly happy despite the meager 2:1 salary. “It was a good performance, a deserved win. We can be satisfied.”
Despite the superiority, the one-goal cushion for the FCZ is hardly reassuring. In front of the home support, the Hearts should pose more offensive danger. The second leg takes place in Edinburgh on Thursday next week.

YB-RSC Anderlecht 0-1
For half an hour everything looked good for the Young Boys. The Bernese attacked and tied down the Belgian record champions with the confidence of a team that was unbeaten this season. The 1-0 seemed only a matter of time. But apart from the chances of Cedric Itten and Fabian Rieder in the first ten minutes, there were no very dangerous actions. And slowly inaccuracies crept into the YB game. The game flattened out.

An individual error then resulted in the goal being conceded: Meschack Elia wanted to launch a counterattack in the 57th minute after a corner kick together with Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu. However, his header landed in his own penalty area and was ideal for Wesley Hoedt, from which defender colleague Hannes Delcroix benefited as a goalscorer at the end of the unfortunate action for the Bernese. Only after the setback did the Young Boys regain their offensive spirit in front of a good 18,000 spectators in Wankdorf and had some good chances to equalize, including a free kick from Rieder that bounced off the crossbar. For Raphaël Wicky it was a bitter first defeat as a YB coach.

CSKA Sofia – FC Basel 1:0
Wicky’s Basel colleague Alex Frei once again had to watch as his players missed great opportunities. Seconds before the break, Liam Millar failed solo at CSKA Sofia’s Brazilian goalie Gustavo Busatto, but recovered the ball again and was unsuccessful in trying to cross for Dan Ndoye. In stoppage time it was Zeki Amdouni who, from a good position, hit an opponent instead of the goal.
Unlike other games this season, however, efficiency wasn’t the main issue. After the first five minutes, FC Basel didn’t achieve much in terms of play. CSKA Sofia grew stronger and deserved the victory, although the 1-0 came about thanks to an own goal from Basel’s full-back Sergio Lopez. As in the last round against Brondby Copenhagen, when they drew 0-1 away, Basel now have to judge it in front of their own supporters.

The Swiss clubs have to overcome the last hurdle on the way to the European Cup group stage in the next eight days. Zurich competes with Heart of Midlothian from Scotland, Basel with CSKA Sofia and the Young Boys with RSC Anderlecht.
For the Swiss champions FC Zurich it is about entering the group stage of the Europa League. The remaining representatives from Basel, Bern and Vaduz – the Liechtensteiners belong to the Swiss Challenge League – are playing for a place in the group phase of the Conference League, which was introduced last season.
