Former Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies has revealed more about Everywhere, the upcoming open-world game he’s designing at new studio Build a Rocket Boy.
Benzies and the Build a Rocket Boy team discussed the ambitions of Everywhere as part of Gamescom 2022’s Opening Night Live show, a game described as blending together gameplay, adventure, creativity, and discovery in a multi-world gaming experience. Very little was given away, but the “sneak peak behind the curtain” suggested that players will have a creative hand as part of the game, as well as playing an “immersive experience”. Could this be part creative tools, part video game?
A mysterious trailer showed off a variety of locations, each of which seemed pulled from an entirely different game. Cars raced in one sequence, while people with guns fought in another. The only uniting factor is that all of these sequences have a Fortnite-like graphical style. However, a final sequence rendered in photorealistic graphics at the very end of the trailer, combined with the words ‘Time For a New World’, could be a hint towards a Ready Player One-like game in which people escape reality to explore VR worlds.
No release date was announced, but Build a Rocket Boy said it hopes to ship Everywhere in 2023.
Everywhere was first announced back in 2017, and Build a Rocket Boy currently has three studios working on it, based in Edinburgh, Los Angeles, and Budapest. Fans have been theorising about what Everywhere could be for years, and Build a Rocket Boy claims some of those theories are “not far off” the truth.
