Airport operator daa has said this morning’s departures at Dublin Airport are running “very efficiently” at what is the start of a busy bank holiday weekend of air travel.
A number of new mitigation measures have been put in place at the airport to avoid a repeat of the chaotic scenes last Sunday.
The daa said its first wave of departures “has run very efficiently this morning as a result of extra staff, the maximum number of security lanes open and an improvement in queue management for passengers entering the terminals for check-in, bag drop and security.”
Forty extra security screening staff will be available across the weekend, including a number who are being redeployed from Cork Airport, which is also operated by daa.
Around 100,000 passengers are passing through the two terminal buildings at Dublin Airport, with 49,000 departing the airport.
Following the delays and long queues last Sunday, which resulted in 1,400 people missing their flights, new arrangements have been put in place for this weekend.
Marquees have been erected outside Terminal 1 so if queues need to move outside at busy points passengers will be sheltered if it rains.
The daa has reminded passengers that the advice to arrive two-and-a-half hours before a short haul flight and three-and-a-half hours before a long haul flight remains in place, but if they have a bag to drop to allow for an additional hour prior to their flight.
A spokesperson for the airport operator said “passengers are heeding the new advice.”
As of 8.20am, it was taking passengers 15 minutes to get through security in both terminals with no queues.
Group Head of Communicatons at the daa Kevin Cullinane said: “By 6am this morning queue times under 10 minutes were being experienced by early morning travellers in both terminal one and two.
“Today is the start of a very busy bank holiday weekend of air travel with up to 50,000 passengers a day departing from Dublin Airport.”

The daa also said that for any passengers who require special assistance ground staff will be visible and ready to assist in both terminals.
It said that while Friday mornings are always busy for air travel, this one is particularly so with many flights departing on the start of the bank holiday.
What’s in Dublin Airport’s plan for the Bank Holiday weekend?
