Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.
Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.
Callen: Lover of treats and walks
Soft and wiggly with all who are in his presence, Callen has had nine years of perfecting his puppy-like charms. With gorgeous brindle markings and one of the friendliest dispositions, it is a wonder this handsome boy is still in good spirits after being rescued from a situation where there were too many pets in the home.
Upon arrival, Arizona Humane Society Emergency Animal Medical Technicians were able to load Callen and a few other pups in the home to be transported to the shelter’s animal trauma hospital. Even while receiving a check-up, the smile never left this senior boy’s face. While in AHS’ care, Callen received medical treatment for a few masses, including surgery to remove a few, as well as some medicine for allergies.
Despite not receiving much socialization in his previous home, this sweet baby is happy to be immediate pals with everyone he meets and is always seeking attention. A lover of treats and walks, Callen is a true gentleman when it comes to getting his snacks and he is a great example of how to behave while on a leash. With an irresistibly wrinkly face you just want to kiss, adorable Callen is hoping there is a family out there who is open to giving and getting lots of love throughout his golden years!

Jolene: A beauty beyond compare
It is no wonder why Dolly made a song about a girl named Jolene, especially when she is as gorgeous as this one! While the 1-year-old guinea pig may not have flaming locks of auburn hair, this brunette beauty has no intention of stealing your man. However, she does apologize in advance for getting this tune stuck in your head.
Jolene was surrendered to the Arizona Humane Society in July after her owner, unfortunately, ran into housing instability issues, a trend that has been seen much more lately due to the ongoing pandemic and housing crisis. While this cute piggy ultimately made her way to the shelter, her owner’s sad situation is an important reminder that AHS has many resources for owners to try and keep pets in their loving homes and out of already over-crowded shelters.
Guinea pigs, otherwise known as cavies, make great pets but need specialized care including an appropriate enclosure and bedding, along with plenty of socialization and enrichment. Adorable furry friends like Jolene are very social creatures who love to chirp when they are happy and enjoy being around people and others of their kind (same-sex of course to prevent unwanted litters). Additionally, guineas have a specific diet that includes lots of leafy greens with Vitamin C-rich foods, as they are unable to make their own.
How to adopt: The Arizona Humane Society’s Virtual Matchmaking Adoptions by appointment is available to place pets with their forever families, as well as give tips on how to care for cute critters. Interested adopters can view available pets, like jubilant Jolene, and schedule an appointment online at azhumane.org/adopt.

Baywatch: A giant lap dog
Baywatch is a 1-year-old, 53-pound terrier blend who is looking for a family and a lap.
Got one?
She doesn’t realize she’s 53 pounds and just wants you to know she wants to hang with you!
Baywatch is living in a foster home and her foster mom says she’s an affectionate and loving dog. She loves giving kisses and getting pets. She loves meeting new people and new dog friends. She is potty trained. She goes out early for long walks and loves it! She sleeps on a stack of blankets next to the bed at night. Her favorite way of getting her energy out is to run back and forth and play fetch. She has not jumped on any of the furniture.
Baywatch is spayed, licensed, microchipped, and vaccinated and her adoption fee is $295. Baywatch is living in a foster home and will be available on Saturdays, visit Friends for Life Animal Rescue or email them at [email protected] At Friends for Life, animals are altered, vaccinated, microchipped, and dewormed. Cats are also tested for FELV/FIV. For more information on Friends for Life, Baywatch, or other cats and dogs looking for homes, visit www.azfriends.org.
