Boris Johnson has stated the UK will have a “necessity to act” if the EU is unwilling to attain a compromise within the deepening disaster over the Northern Ireland Protocol.
The Prime Minister – who travels to Belfast on Monday for emergency talks with the Northern Ireland events – stated the Government remained open to “genuine dialogue” with Brussels.
But amid fears of a looming commerce struggle, he stated that if there was no motion on the EU facet, the Government will set out its “next steps” in an announcement to Parliament “in the coming days”.

His warning comes amid studies ministers might desk emergency laws as early as this week to override the protocol which requires customs checks on items shifting from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.
EU leaders have stated such a transfer would violate Britain’s worldwide treaty obligations beneath the Withdrawal Agreement signed by Mr Johnson and would lead to retaliatory measures.

Earlier, nonetheless, Ireland’s Foreign Minister Simon Coveney warned there could be a “consequence” if the UK took unilateral motion in breach of its obligations beneath worldwide legislation.

“Any tariff situation would have to go to arbitrators. It is not something they can do willy-nilly, arbitrarily.”
