The family and its firms, which include A&H Acquisition Corp. and ACHS Management Corp., have shelled out about $163,000 so far to the governor in the last year or so, campaign-finance records show. And some people associated with the company, which has holdings in SoHo, the Meatpacking District and Cobble Hill in Brooklyn, have contributed roughly the maximum, $69,700. Records indicate the family has not typically written big checks to gubernatorial candidates in the past.
Efforts to reach the company and its principals by phone and email were unsuccessful, as was an attempt to reach Alex Adjmi, an A&H co-founder, at an address on the New Jersey Shore that’s listed in campaign records as his home.
But the company seems keenly interested in electing Hochul, a Democrat who will face off against Republican Lee Zeldin in November.
Alex Adjmi kicked in $69,000 this year, records show, $700 less than the limit for individuals, $69,700. And AMJ Realty Limited Partnership, a company that shares A&H’s address at 1412 Broadway, has also given $69,000.
Meanwhile, Harry Adjmi, the “H” in A&H, has donated $22,000 to the Hochul campaign since spring 2021, records show, with other family members chipping in smaller sums too.
The Adjmi family has extensive holdings across New York but also in Chicago, California and New Jersey, according to A&H’s website. “Our early foundations began in focusing on retail property tenant repositioning,” it says, but the firm, founded in 1980, is now “delving into development, residential, office and real estate-backed financial securities.”
But gauging the extent of its investments in the properties touted on its site can be tricky.
The commercial building at 529 Broadway in SoHo, for instance, is owned by a team led by Wharton Properties, and 21-29 Ninth Ave. in the Meatpacking District appears to be controlled by Aurora Capital Associates, deeds show.
Likewise, neither A&H nor ACHS appears to outrightly control 218 W. 35th St. in the Garment District; same with 511 Fifth Ave., an office building by the main branch of the New York Public Library, or 205 Smith St., a retail offering in Cobble Hill.
At several of the sites, the Adjmis have partnered with developers with ties to New York’s Syrian Jewish community, a tight-knit group known for its real estate heavy-hitters, including Wharton Properties’ Jeff Sutton. Others include Joe Sitt, Albert Laboz and the Cayre family. Several have written checks to Hochul.
For his part, Alex Adjmi may be a believer in having high-profile government connections.
On Jan. 19, 2021, in one of his final acts in office, President Donald Trump pardoned Alex Adjmi for a previous conviction for money laundering and insurance fraud. In 1996 he pleaded guilty to five felonies, including laundering drug money for Cololmbia’s Cali cartel. He spent nearly four years in prison.
Though the Adjmis may be pro-Hochul, not every family member has fallen in line. Raymond Adjmi, who works at 1412 Broadway, gave $1,800 to ex-Republican candidate Andrew Giuliani in March and does not seem to have donated since.
