After confirming his brain death on May 31, it was at 12:15 pm on Saturday that Archie Battersbee died after being disconnected from the machines. The 12-year-old had been left in a coma after trying to carry out a viral TikTok challenge.
Archie Battersbee passed away during the afternoon of last Saturday, August 6 at 12:15 p.m.. The news was reported by his mother to the British press, “he was such a beautiful boy. He fought to the end and I am so proud to be his mother,” she said outside the Royal London hospital.
The 12-year-old boy had been in a coma since the end of May of this year and the doctors decreed his brain death on the 31st of that same month. Nevertheless, the family had taken legal action so that life support was not withdrawnas they awaited his recovery.
As detailed by The Guardian, from the hospital they had confirmed that there was no chance that Archie would come out of the coma, so in early July Judge Emma Arbuthnot of the High Court Justice authorized the withdrawal of life support. The procedure finally took place on Saturday at 10 am
“His stats were completely stable for two hours until they completely removed the vent and he turned completely blue,” said Ella Carter, a close relative of the family.
What happened to Archie Battersbee?
Archie Battersbee was found unconscious by his parents on April 7, at which time he was diagnosed with severe brain damage. Hollie Dance and Paul Battersbee indicated that moments ago, the boy was participating in a viral TikTok challenge.
This online challenge, which is called “Blackout Challenge”, consisted of holding your breath until you pass out. Archie even showed signs of having put a garter around his neck to achieve the goal, which had gone viral on networks in those months.
This would not be the first time something like this has happened, since in 2021 a minor had already died in Italy for attempting the same challenge. The platform to date has removed much of the content related to this challenge.
