This Monday a new explosion was recorded in the fuel depots of the city of Matanzas (western Cuba). The incident occurs after a third tank collapsed today in the industrial area, where a serious industrial fire, unprecedented since Friday, is still active.
“The third tank also collapsed, after fuel spilled from the second. and further compromised the situation in the early hours of the morning”, declared the governor of Matanzas, Mario Sabines, to official media.
He explained that Last night there were several explosions, the smoke increased and the fire from the second tank compromised the third tank of the facility, which has eight fuel tanks..
“Indeed, the risk that we had announced occurred,” said the governor.
He detailed that “the content (fuel) of the second tank was spread and the fire spread to the third tank. The area of the fire is quite wide, it covers three tanks,” from the supertanker base in the northwestern Cuban city, located 100 kilometers east of Havana.
On the other hand, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reported Monday that at least 85 soldiers were sent to help put out the fire.
“We send support to the brotherly people of Cuba, due to a fire in some fuel tanks, they were specialists from Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and they were elements of the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena),” he said from the National Palace.
In his usual morning conference, López Obrador also assured that more military elements and elements from the Mexican state oil company will be sent if necessary to support the work in Cuba..
“If necessary, yes (we send more), but we already have the technicians and we have the foam that is used to fight fires and we are going to continue helping,” he said.
“We hope the fire can be put out. It has been complicated, quite complicated and we are going to continue helping”, he added.
