And off the coast of Western Australia, a single seedling of seagrass sprouted up, and continues to be rising to today.
Researchers from the University of Western Australia and Flinders University have decided {that a} 200-square-kilometre patch of seagrass is the one plant, and the largest and oldest plant in the world.
The researchers had taken samples of seagrass shoots throughout Shark Bay to find out the variety of plant life there.
And they had been shocked to find it was really only one plant.
“That’s it, just one plant has expanded over 180km in Shark Bay, making it the largest known plant on earth,” lead creator Jane Edgeloe stated.
“The existing 200 square kilometres of ribbon weed meadows appear to have expanded from a single, colonising seedling.”
Since then it has survived outstanding ranges of altering local weather, and the hungry chomps of a whole bunch of generations of dugongs.
Australia’s most endangered animals
Flinders University ecologist Martin Breed stated they had been baffled at how the plant has survived and thrived so lengthy.
“Our seagrass has seen its fair share of environmental change too. Even today, it experiences a huge range of average temperatures; from 17C to 30C,” he stated.
“Salinities from normal seawater to double that. And from darkness to extreme high light conditions.
“These situations would usually be extremely traumatic for vegetation. Yet, it seems to maintain on going.”
The researchers are now conducting various experiments on the seagrass to understand how it survives and thrives.
The research into the plant has been published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B journal.
Shark Bay is a World Heritage site about 800km north of Perth.
It is home to dolphins, whales, sharks, dugongs and rays, as well as a wide range of endangered animals.
