A second cousin of Cape Town theology pupil Jesse Hess has been found guilty of murdering her and her grandfather, Chris Lategan.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila mentioned David van Boven was convicted within the Western Cape High Court on Monday of homicide, two counts of theft with aggravating circumstances, sexual assault,  fraud and theft. 

His co-accused, Tasliem Ambrose, was acquitted of homicide, sexual assault, fraud and theft. 

“He was only convicted on two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances,” Ntabazalila mentioned.

Hess was in her first 12 months of college research after she matriculated from Table View High School. 

She was at dwelling with her grandfather at their Beaumont Court flat in Parow on 30 August 2019 when Van Boven arrived, ostensibly to gather cash. Ambrose was with him. 

In Hess’ final moments, she was sexually assaulted, smothered, a sock and pillowcase have been stuffed in her mouth, her mouth was taped closed, and a belt was used to strangle her.

A black belt had been pulled round her grandfather’s neck so tightly that the veins in his face ruptured.

During the trial, forensic pathologist Dr Grace Uren mentioned the sock and pillowcase that have been stuffed in Hess’ mouth have been found when the tape was eliminated. 

Cellphones, two TVs, rings, and a laptop computer have been stolen from the home.

News24 beforehand reported {that a} barber in Ravensmead purchased Hess’ cellphone and offered the machine to a pal. Both have been arrested and charged with possession of stolen items.

Subpoenaed cellphone information linked Lategan’s cellphone to Ambrose, who had used the machine to name his father, the courtroom heard. The name wasn’t answered.

Both pleaded not guilty. Ambrose mentioned he was on the scene, however that Van Boven did every thing.
