A man has been remanded in custody after he appeared before court this afternoon charged with the alleged murder of a 25-year-old man in Toowoomba earlier this year.
Key points:
- Police have charged a man over the shooting death of Thor Morgan
- A firearm was located in the Condamine River late last month
- A 24-year-old man will face court today in Brisbane
Police allege Thor Morgan was driving a car on Ruthven Street in Harlaxton when he was followed by two people in a stolen ute on March 15.
Police allege a firearm was discharged from the ute and Mr Morgan was shot in the head about 2.50am.
Mr Morgan succumbed to his injuries at Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital two months later on May 16.
A 24-year-old man from Cambooya, south of Toowoomba, was arrested in Brisbane this morning and charged with one count each of murder, arson of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and unlawful possession of weapons.
His matter was adjourned until September 6 for mention at Toowoomba Magistrates Court.
Toowoomba Criminal Investigation Branch officer Heath McQueen said it was likely the man accused of murder didn’t act alone.
“We believe that there was at least one other person who was in that vehicle with the 24-year-old charged with murder today and that person has assisted that offender with destroying evidence in attempting to cover up this offence,” Detective Inspector McQueen said.
It comes after police divers recovered a firearm from a northern branch of the Condamine River on July 26 which police will allege was the weapon used in the incident.
“It’s a result of information that has been provided to us and as you know with investigations we often rely on members of the community to provide information to police to help us progress investigations,” he said.
Police also allege a number of stolen cars were involved in the incident — a grey station wagon, which had been stolen from a Newtown home in February, and a white SUV stolen from a Mount Lofty address in March.
The cars were later found burnt out — one in Felton and another one in the Oakey area.
“I’m just imploring anyone who may have been involved in this offence now is the time, take the opportunity to come forward … provide local detectives with your version of events in relation to what might have occurred,” Detective Inspector McQueen said.
“I expect that there may be a further arrest in relation to this matter.”
